Xixi Wetland revives flower festival

A flower festival will be held at the Xixi National Wetland Park in Hangzhou for the first time from April 9 to May 18.

A flower parade, together with acrobatics and other performances will be staged at the wetland area during the event.

The parade will include 12 floats featuring different blossoms and flower-decorated bicycles to promote the idea of a green lifestyle.

Visitors will be able to learn more about horticulture and flowers through exhibitions and lectures at the festival.

There will also be flower-themed matchmaking activities and group weddings held by the organizer.

The floral fair is an occasion with hundreds of years of history in China and dates back as early as the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907).

However, the tradition died out in modern society and folklore experts have been calling on the government to restore the tradition.

The Hangzhou government decided to hold the first modern flower festival in the Xixi National Wetland Park, which features abundant ecological resources, beautiful natural scenery and rich cultural heritage.

A lot of recent popular movies have been filmed in the beautiful wetland, including "If You Are the One" and "Kungfu Cyborg."

Xixi Wetland is the first national wetland park of China, and incorporates a mix of urban, farming and cultural wetland.

The park is located on the western outskirts of Hangzhou, less than 5 kilometers from the West Lake and 6 kilometers from the Wulinmen area.

The Xixi area used to cover 60 square kilometers but its size decreased due to a lack of protection in modern times. The total area of the wetland currently under protection is 11.5 square kilometers.

Apart from the flower festival, the wetland also holds the annual Plum Festival from February to March, the Dragon Boat Festival which falls on fifth day of the fifth lunar month and the Persimmon Festival from September to October.
