Dancers prepare for DanceSport championships
THE world's best dancers from around 40 countries and regions are gathering in Shanghai to compete in the WDSF World Ten Dance Championships and the 8th China Shanghai International DanceSport Open.
The two-day competition begins today at Shanghai Luwan Stadium and includes competitions in a wide spectrum of dancing disciplines from Latin and Ballroom to Standard.
"The World Ten Dance Championship is the most difficult event for our athletes," said Carlos Freitag, president of the World DanceSport Federation. "They must have perfect preparation, mentally and physically, because during the whole day, they have to change constantly from our Standard to the Latin discipline."
"The Ten Dance Championship is also the most spectacular and exciting event of the WDSF calendar year," said Carlos Freitag, president of WDSF.
"This championship requires a perfect and high concentration of our athletes because of their continuous changes, and on each dance they have to show their best performances. On this championship only the best physically prepared athletes are participating, because of the above mentioned difficulties."
Before the championship this weekend, dancers visited local schools and communities to teach people how to dance. They visited Fudan University, IBM's employee club and Fuxing Park to interact with residents.
The competition has become a great platform for the athletes to prove their skills and win fame. Meanwhile, the event has created more interest in the sport locally with hundreds of thousands of people watching the event or taking part in the sport.
"DanceSport is a perfect combination of sport and art and is a popular event in Shanghai and across China," said Zhao Wen, vice mayor of Shanghai.
"This is not only a competition for professional performers, but also a celebration for all dance fans," she added.
The event has also given Huangpu an opportunity to demonstrate its innovative and enterprising spirit to the world, district officials said.
WDSF has given the district the rights to hold the Grand Slam Finals from 2012 to 2016.
