Hand in hand with Jiading News for 15 years of trials and hardships

DEVOTING themselves to interview, editing and writing

'Working overtime: a common habit for us'

Shen Qing

At Jiading News, everybody tries very hard and working overtime is pretty common. This selfless dedication is due to our sense of responsibility and persistence.

In January, during the regional lianghui, Chinese People's Congress and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, many reporters and editors worked until midnight everyday. They proofread all the articles again and again for perfection.

For years, our staff can never enjoy the whole national holidays, because these days are always busy for them and they will not be comfortable if their work is not well done. Since we've chosen this profession, we have the obligation and responsibility to do it better.

'A bowl of hot dumplings on Lunar New Year's Eve'

Lu Xiaofeng

For many Lunar Chinese New Year's Eves, I had been enjoying the cheerful time with my family. Every year we would stay up until midnight and accompany the elderly to pray for happiness in the coming year. But ever since I became a journalist, this ritual has been shelved. On the last Lunar Chinese New Year's Eve, I had to leave early to do my job before the family reunion dinner was over, and I felt the unhappiness of my family.

That evening, I witnessed the hardship and dedication of people who stay at their posts for work, and I was also very much moved.

During an interview with Zhang Yuan, a bus driver of the No. 9 bus in Hongqiao Transportation Hub, he brought the cooker from his home to cook two sets of tangyuan, a traditional Chinese dumpling made of glutinous rice flour. To my surprise, one set was specially prepared for me. At that moment, the distance between the interviewer and the interviewee was gone.

'Our newspaper is needed'

Sun Ling

I have been working at Jiading News for eight years, with six years as an editor. I spend almost every day in article sorting and editing. The passion from our correspondents and numerous readers makes me feel that our newspaper is needed.

'Living up to our readers' trust'

Chen Du

I have been working at Jiading News for almost a year. What impressed me most is a "special mission" that I received when I joined the newspaper.

I got a letter from a reader, complaining about property companies' "doing nothing." At first I hesitated about if I should go and conduct on-site interviews, then a senior colleague told me, "It doesn't matter whether you could write the article or not; the most important thing is that you should live up to the reader's trust."

A year later, I am still keeping the text messages from my readers. They are not only a few words of thanks, but also represent the trust I gained.

Support from different corners

'My love for Jiading grows'

Zhu Guangzu

Thanks to the trust of the editor-in-chief of Jiading News, for three years I have been undertaking the job of correcting errors in English articles since the English edition of Jiading News was established. The English edition is published every month. Right now it has published 36 issues with nearly 30 articles each, reaching a total number of more than 1,000 articles. Through the study of these many articles, I have become gradually familiar with Jiading, and have developed a deep love for this district. Today, every piece of news in Jiading catches my eyes as if it were my old hometown.

Through long-term exchanges with the staff from Jiading News, the relationship between us has also been growing. Their busy figures and smiling faces in the office are often recalled in my mind. Cooperating with them has always been a nice experience for me. At the same time, I have also learned a lot from them, especially their diligent and modest attitudes.

'Interview with an interpreter'

Xie Zuocan

In early 2009, I was doing a story about three generations of farmers. Correspondent Wei Xinggen from Waigang Town helped me find such a family.

I was a little nervous because the interviewees Gong Fubao and Wei Xueqin were an old couple. As a new Shanghainese, I could hardly understand a word of their local dialect but my thanks went to Wei, who volunteered to work as an interpreter for us. On the day, Gong's son and the village official Ming Gong also accepted an interview, accompanying me to see an old farmhouse and experience working in the fields. With the help of Wei, I successfully completed the feature story "The pain and joy of farmers' three generations."

'So that's me'

Li Huacheng

During the three years when I worked for Jiading News, I have realized two dreams of my life: got my favorite job and married a beautiful girl. I'm having a happy life now, but one fact that make me uneasy is that both my wife and my marriage witness are my former interviewees, while the bridesmaid and best man are also work partners during my time in Jiading News. If there is anybody who has taken the advantage of his work in Jiading News, it's me, who has caught the chance to win a beautiful girl's heart and made good friends with many young men.

'Being late for an interview taught me a lesson'

Gu Xianhui

The understanding and support from the readers touched me most during the past three years. I'm ashamed to say, I had an appointment with interviewees, but because of traffic jams I was late. When I hurriedly rushed to the interview location, the interviewees had long been waiting for me. One of them told me not to worry. She had a seat for me and gave me some water. They also provided many useful news clues.

'Old lady Chen accompanied me in a remote area'

Wang Lihui

In August 2010, the second month when I worked at Jiading News, I met an old lady named Chen Lanfang on my way to Malu Town. I had just finished an interview in Yuyuan Community and wanted to go back home. There were no bus lines between the Yuyuan Community and Malu Town and I had to walk to the Town. Chen met me there, for fear that a young girl walking alone in this remote area might be at risk, she insisted accompanying me to the town. Chen is 68 years old. Her enthusiasm moved me deeply and reminded me of my own family.

United, diligent and hand in hand

'Flame in winter'

Guan Wenfei

The solidarity and fraternity of Jiading News are like a flame in winter that has been warming my heart since I came here a year and a half ago.

My first article was about agriculture in Jiading. At that time I was a bit afraid of not knowing about agriculture and the style of the newspaper. My colleagues encouraged me and offered many useful reference materials. An experienced reporter also reminded me of the importance of an interview outline. All this help made me feel warm and I integrated into this team smoothly.

'True love in busy times'

Gu Jialan

Eight years' editing experience with Jiading News has made me the most experienced editor here. The period between the springs of 2010 and 2011 was the busiest time for me, but also witnessed the great changes in my lifetime. I moved away from my old apartment for a new one, I got married and I had a new job editing civil news. All these things put great pressure on me and I have been so busy. Good news is that all my colleagues will help me whenever I need help. I feel lucky enough that I can work with such nice colleagues.

'From the disturbed to integration'

Lu Lijun

I felt disturbed when I got my first task: making a series of selected stories for commemorating the 15th anniversary of the newspaper's resuming publication. The cover design of the selected edition was really a headache for me. Then a senior staff member sent me some local paintings for reference. The local paintings stirred my mind, and the cover design with these painting elements finally got approved. I learned a lot from this detail-oriented guidance.
