Big plans for Hongqiao as Shanghai's 'Western Gateway'
THERE'S "Greater Pudong" to the east and in the west is rising "Greater Hongqiao," an international trading hub. Victoria Fei reports.
Hongqiao Development Zone is Shanghai's first foreign-oriented economic development area. The zone in Changning District is trying to build the district into a major hub for international trade activities.
So far 18 long-term projects have been drawn up by the local government. To be completed within five years, they will contribute to a strategic structure of "Greater Hongqiao" in west Shanghai and "Greater Pudong" in east Shanghai.
"The construction of the Hongqiao main functional area is underway," says Qian Xuewa, director of Changning Development and Reform Commission.
"The area's orientation and plan will be based on national strategy and Hongqiao's special location that connects the Yangtze River Delta region and Shanghai."
After China's reform and opening-up, Hongqiao used to be a central area where exhibitions were held.
However, its 250,000 square meters of exhibition space cannot meet the demands of Shanghai's goal of becoming an international trade center.
In view of this, the district government is planning to expand its exhibition facilities and areas. Hongqiao International Conference Center is one of the 18 projects planned to be built.
It will provide an international conference hall that can accommodate around 3,000 people and several tens of multifunctional meeting halls of different sizes. There will be world-class hotels as well.
The district will also host Shanghai World Trade Center and Hongqiao Trade Exhibition Center. Shanghai World Trade Center is expected to become a platform for international trade organizations, management institutions of domestic trade, transnational companies and industry associations.
According to district government's plan, the main functional area of foreign trade includes Hongqiao Foreign Trade Center, Hongqiao Linkong Area, Hongqiao Trade Headquarters Ecological Park and areas along and within Yan'an Road W., Hongqiao Road and Xianxia Road W.
Hongqiao Foreign Trade Center will be built up into a destination offering international shopping experiences, modern purchasing and trade, and international service trade.
Hongqiao Linkong Area will center on headquarters economy, professional exhibitions, air logistics and service outsourcing.
Hongqiao Trade Headquarters Ecological Park will gather the headquarters of world-renowned trade enterprises.
Meanwhile, areas along and within the three roads will provide cultural, entertainment, recreational and fitness services.
Hongqiao Art Festival
While Changning is surging ahead in business and foreign trade, it is also developing cultural exchanges to make the area more enjoyable to live and work in.
Hongqiao Art Festival, themed "Cultural Autumn," will be held from early October to middle November. This year's event, marking the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, will be the area's largest ever.
The festival is a cultural platform of the Yangtze River Delta region and builds up the district's cultural image as the "West Gate of Shanghai" to the neighboring cities.
As a host to one-third of the foreign consulates in Shanghai, Changning is a district with a high degree of openness. The festival will generate more cultural exchanges.
The opening ceremony will feature 50 Haibao, Expo mascot, in the traditional dress of different countries.
The monthlong event will feature the Miss Chinese Cosmos Pageant 2009, the Sixth Shanghai International Magic Festival and the Lotus Award national dancing competition.
The city's professional singing and dancing troupes will perform in district communities in an effort to improve the public's cultural tastes.
Troupes from South Korea, Russia, Japan and Austria will also perform.
Traditional culture and intangible heritage of the Yangtze River Delta region will be showcased.
