Campaign for better air quality launched

CHANGNING government has launched this year’s clean air action.

The action mainly targets six areas — energy, industry, transport, construction, agriculture, and social life.

Measures to fight air pollution include shifting the coal-burning boilers and industrial furnaces to clean fuels, transforming power generators to reduce their emissions, phasing out high-polluting vehicles and further controlling of dust at construction sites.

Coal burning will be completely banned next year.

This entails shutting down dozens of boilers and industrial furnaces as well as banning decentralized coal-fired facilities in the district.

Changning has been using Internet technology to monitor the district’s air quality.

The district government installed a real-time monitoring system at all the 20 construction sites to evaluate dust pollution in the air.

An air-quality monitoring station, Huayang station, was equipped with similar technology to publicize real-time air quality.

Meanwhile, the annual mosquito-control campaign has been launched at old residential quarters in Changning to prevent the population of the disease-carrying insect from exploding.

Nearly 400 old residential quarters within the district took part in the campaign.

According to Shanghai Patriotic Health Campaign Commission, early April is the best time to kill mosquitoes because they have started reproducing but have not begun to hatch in large numbers.

High-proliferation areas such as residential complexes, markets, public toilets, construction sites and parks will be targeted.

The commission said it will use safe and effective chemicals to eradicate mosquito larvae.

Monitoring points will be installed in every sub-district in Changning, and special training will be given to people who join pest-control teams.

What’s more, workers from Huayang sanitation station in Changning cleaned the garbage illegally damped along the thoroughfare of Metro Line 3 and 4 between Zhongshan Park Station and Yanan Rd W. Station. They cleaned out 15 tons of garbage in several hours.
