Doctor’s patient care goes beyond call of duty

In her 18 years at Xianxia neighborhood community health service center, doctor Ye Xiaojing has taken many roles — most recently team leader.

Every year, she sees more than 18,000 patients, and the number’s continuing to rise. She says that caring for the community residents’ health interest is her prime concern, and has become close friends with residents as she does her best to solve their problems.

In 2007 and 2008, Ye received a Top 10 Team Leader award in Changning District. In 2010 she was named a “good doctor” by Xianxia neighborhood community, and in 2014 she was recognized as an excellent family doctor in Changning.

Suddenly collapsed

“A family doctor shouldn’t only be concerned about a patient’s illness, but care for the person and their family with a loving heart, to take care of community residents,” she said.

Ye met a family who were struggling financially during a routine outpatient service day at the station, when the woman suddenly collapsed while waiting in line.

Ye and nurses acted immediately and diagnosed her as having low blood sugar levels. The woman regained consciousness shortly after receiving a glucose solution injection.

In the following treatment sessions, Ye learned about the woman’s life.

Her mother was paralyzed and bedridden, her son was at high school, and the three generations were living in a room of less than 15 square meters.

She had retired due to ill-health and then her husband had been diagnosed with liver cancer. Her life seemed to be lurching from one disaster to another, the woman said.

That week, she was going with her husband to hospitals for treatment. The stress and financial burden she faced led to her ill-health.

On learning this, Ye adjusted the treatment the woman was receiving for low blood sugar and contacted doctors she knew at Huadong Hospital to clarify the diagnosis of her husband.

Eventually the woman’s condition stabilized and her husband recovered well from surgery. But the family was in a difficult financial situation due to expensive medical bills.

Launching an aiding fund

Ye set up a fund for the family, asking people to give a helping hand through donating money or goods.

The neighborhood community not only provided financial assistance but also arranged for a reduction of the medical costs, helping the family through difficult times.

Ye has also volunteered to be the family’s doctor and provided health services, ranging from drop-in diagnosis and treatment to bringing medicines and liaising with hospitals.

A bicycle, a bag and a memo, are the tools of Ye’s trade as she visits every building on every street in the neighborhood. She knows which patient has a chronic disease and which patient is allergic to what medicine.

The busy schedule leaves her with very little free time, and has meant sacrificing holidays.

But her efforts and dedication have earned Ye the trust of the residents.

Since the family doctor contract service was launched in 2012, a total of 1,384 residents have signed up with her, testament to Ye’s reputation as a doctor devoted to her patients.
