Giving young people in district a helping hand

Xu Bin is head of the Shanghai Sunshine Community Youth Affairs Center branch in Changning District.
He became a youth social worker in 2004 and has personally helped 132 unemployed youths find jobs, as well as persuade 32 to go back to school.
In a career path filled with opportunities and challenges, Xu says that as a social worker you must be 100 percent dedicated.
Now he leads a team that has created a the Rainbow Home Workshop — a health education program for young people and a student help project.
They address employment education, youth education and school education and have achieved positive results, says Xu.
For a social work organization, it’s crucial to create an effective working environment for the team, so they can offer the highest levels of help while developing their careers and enjoying their job, says Xu.
Almost daily, he visits organizations and companies that can provide resources and help his team.
Xu says that the work social workers do is very hard, and as the leader he needs to provide as much support as possible.
He admits that since becoming head of the center his role has changed.
Xu says he is no longer a hands-on social worker, but instead someone who nurtures other social workers and guides the general development of the center.
Now in all projects Xu says he takes a leader’s perspective — though ensuring he gives freedom to his team to work out plans and carry out solutions themselves.
Xu also hosts training and seminars for social workers, while his team has won many awards for excellence in the district and city.
The work that Xu and his colleagues are doing helps young people and their families through difficult times, regain confidence and ease their tensions and aggression towards society, he says.
Since 2010, the Shanghai Sunshine Community Youth Affairs Center branch in Changning District has helped 15,000 young people and other groups, said officials.
