Head of endoscopy department always on call for her patients

Peng Haixia is the director of the endoscopy office at Tong Ren Hospital. As an emerging leader in the medical profession, Peng not only performs over 3,000 surgical procedures every year but also develops new treatment techniques.

Recalling one recent case, a 79-year-old woman came to Tong Ren Hospital after two costly surgeries — one for esophageal cancer and the other to treat complications from the first procedure which prevented her from eating or drinking.

Much to the relief of the woman’s son, who feared the financial burden of another potentially ineffective and bank-breaking operation, Peng reopened the woman’s blocked digestive track with a dilating silicone tube that was inserted without hospitalization. The procedure cost less than 1,000 yuan (US$160). After four months of periodic treatment, the woman’s ailment abated, allowing her to eat and drink normally.

Such cases are all in a day’s work for Peng.

“Being a doctor is a profession, but a good heart is always paramount,” she says.

Peng has been on-call 24 hours a day for nearly 14 years. Needless to say, work always comes first for her.

“This is how doctors are made,” she reflects. “To enjoy the glory of the profession, you have to abide by the rules, too.”

In academic research, Peng has published dozens of papers in medical journals and also teaches young doctors and interns.
