Hongqiao acts to clean up urban environment
THE Hongqiao neighborhood has removed 60 tons of rubbish from 1257 Zhongshan Road W. in a campaign to improve urban environment.
The move cleaned up garbage, debris and waste that had been piled up near the entrance to 1257 Zhongshan Rd W. and under the nearby elevated ring road for years.
The region is notorious for its mess and local residents regularly complained about it.
A mother and her son occupied the public area for a long time and lived on picking and recycling scraps.
But despite several efforts talking to them, the two haven’t changed their behaviors and continued to pile up scraps in the area.
Old fridge, televisions, tires, electric wires, boxes and metal have created a mountain of garbage that is nearly 100 meters long. It seriously affected life of nearby residents.
Hongqiao neighborhood studied the case and drew up a plan. First, they estimated the amount of scraps and arranged for vehicles, coordinated with government bodies, and the eventual settling of the mother and the son.
Environment and municipal administrators of Hongqiao worked with Gaojie Sanitation Company and spent nearly 6 hours on May 24 to clean up the area.
A total 22 vehicles were dispatched to handle 60 tons of materials.
The mother and son tried to obstruct the plan with violent acts, but were controlled by the local police.
Since the campaign started months ago, neighborhoods including Tianshan and Xianxia have been mending shortages and seeking new methods to improve urban environment.
In the past two months, Tianshan urban management team corrected 238 illegal outdoor facilities with increasing efficiency. The team also participated in comprehensive correction of 780 Zunyi Road, Yuping wet market and Hongqiao area. They found 16 illegal sales stalls and 10 illegal signboards.
The frequency of patrolling has been extended to prevent recurrence of the problems.
The Xianxia neighborhood outlined future plans that will include building platforms, setting up mechanisms, and striving for real effects.
The neighborhood will enhance supervision and law enforcement, and allocate responsible persons for each key area and time slot.
