Models strut their stuff in global catwalk match
CHANGNING District is known for being cosmopolitan and welcoming and now it is making its name in fashion modeling.
Forty top models from around China and 30 foreign models from top international agencies competed for honors on October 22 and 23 in the Changning Jiuhua Cup World Supermodel Contest.
The male model winner was Xu Menghan, a student from Shanghai University of Engineering Science. The award for best female model went to a contestant from Germany.
The competition at the Shanghai International Gymnastics Center was divided into three sections: swimming suits, qipao and evening wear.
This was the third year of the contest. "We are trying to make it more and more creative," says Chai Ruiying, chief director of the final.
It took three days to decorate the stage, giving it a feel of old Shanghai, he adds.
Although a German female model took first place, the influence of Chinese models is growing, says Chai, who has coached models for many years.
"Foreign models do have advantage in terms of figure, but Chinese models are getting more popular on the world's runways. Given trends toward diversity and individuality, Chinese faces are favored by foreign designers to interpret their work."
Supermodel Song Shanshan, one of the judges, says most Chinese models have a trained, standard catwalk style, while foreign models are more natural and relaxed. "They seem to be themselves," she says.
"As a judge, I look for balance. I hope Chinese models will not always be so cool and aloof in their style. They can act more naturally and appear happier in front of the audience."
Before final, contestants visited neighborhood communities and squares to stage catwalk shows and interact with locals. For foreign models, it was a new way to feel the pulse of the city.
While the event has been held in Changning for three years, the district's cultural activities are increasing as well. Every year the district sponsors an autumn cultural festival, concerts, weekend dance parties, and forums on culture for citizens.
It stages a national dancing contest and Shanghai International Magic Festival.
Cultural exchanges with other countries are a fixture of the district.
The district also offers a cultural travel route that includes the Ballet School of Shanghai, Liu Haisu Art Museum, Soong Ching Ling Cemetery, the renovated Changning Cultural and Art Center and views of scenic Suzhou Creek.
