National plaudit for porcelain restorer
SHANGHAI-BORN Jiang Daoyin is known as China’s top porcelain restoration expert and, following a submission by Changning District, his craft was recognized last month among the fourth batch of national intangible cultural heritage.
This is also the first time a Shanghai intangible cultural heritage in cultural relic repair has been recognized as a national item. Nine heritages nominated by Shanghai made it into the latest list.
Fragile porcelains are very difficult to repair, and in restoring unearthed broken pieces to their former glories, Jiang has been compared to a doctor returning them to good health.
In the Capital Museum in Beijing, there is a blue and white flask with a phoenix head from the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). One of the top exhibits, most visitors who admire it are unaware that it was pieced together by Jiang from 48 fragments.
With pieces ranging from the size of the palm of a hand to the size of a bean, Jiang spent 13 months putting it back together.
Jiang also teaches his porcelain restoration craft at the Shanghai Institute of Visual Art and hosts numerous lectures and seminars across China.
