Neighborhood a frog prince for music school entrepreneur — and vice versa

What do we mean when we talk about “the unanticipated?” Like the princess who reluctantly accepted a frog as her life-long companion, but later rejoiced when the frog proved to be a prince, entrepreneurs had better make use of every social connection to pursue their dreams. Just like with the tale of the frog, any social connection might turn out to be a jackpot.

Wu Lei, a co-founder of the Shanghai-based MiFan Music,”found his frog prince in Xinhua neighborhood, where he located his startup at Dingchuanghui business incubation center.

When members of the neighborhood heard that he was looking for venues to hold concerts, doors opened and Wu was offered venues without charge.

Music lovers who knew MiFan Music through its online activity gathered at the neighborhood and played and listened to music together.

A demo lesson attracted a teacher from Fudan Senior High School who later subscribed to the music courses.

In November, a teacher surnamed Li with MiFan Music held lectures on playing the ukulele. Students later expressed their wish to keep on learning.

From offering venues to bringing in customers, the neighborhood has supported Wu after he resorted to it to start his business.

In return, entrepreneurs like Wu help to rejuvenate neighborhoods.

Xia, an office worker from Xinhua neighborhood, said that venues that used to be frequented only by the elderly are now attracting a more diverse group of people.

Founded in March, 2015, MiFan Music is an online education platform which aims to improve music education in the city, with a self-proclaimed aim to “train the best music producers and good music consumers.”

Teachers and students can sign up at www.mifanmusic.com. After registration, teachers can advertise themselves on the webpage, whereas students, based on their interests and location, can choose a suitable teacher.

A student will reach an agreement with a teacher online, take lessons offline and give his or her feedback online.

Courses include guitar, ukulele, bass, drum, piano, violin, cello, saxophone and many others.
