New Union Textra helps budding entrepreneurs
Established in 1985, Shanghai New Union Textra Import and Export Company in Changning District was among the first companies that combined industry and trade in the country.
The company now has 1,300 purchasing agencies and 900 suppliers in about 100 countries and regions around the world. Its annual revenue is about US$678 million. But instead of being just a giant in the industry, New Union Textra is taking a role in helping young entrepreneurs.
In July 2013, the company renovated an old textile factory on Xuanhua Road in downtown Changing and built an entrepreneurial base that focuses on fashion and creative design, as well as e-commerce platforms.
Any individual with an idea to start a new business can apply for the six-month program. The company provides free office space and invites finance, law, recruitment, media and management experts to give advice.
New Union Textra believes helping young entrepreneurs with creative ideas will help nurture new talents that may lead to potential partners.
For a textile company, creativity is just as important as technological innovation. As an industrial leader, New Union Textra has extensive resources and knowledge that smaller companies simply cannot match.
The company provides fabric testing services for new projects, giving designers the confidence that they are using the right materials.
Li Bowen did a six-month program at New Union Textra’s base on a project that recycled old clothes. He used the time to gain valuable experience and later opened his own company.
Zheng Bo designed a pillow that turns into fireproofing “armor” that can help a user escape a residential fire. New Union Textra helped Zheng apply for a patent for his pillow.
