Renovation project targets homes

Changning District started refurbishing homes for seniors who have a minimum living standard.
This year, 82 households in the district qualified for the refurbishment and all work is estimated to be finished by the end of November. The projects will be evaluated the following month.
The repair work is expected to improve the safety of the apartments. Barrier-free facilities will also be installed to make life more convenient for occupants. Officials said such facilities will reduce accidents like falling down, fires and gas leaks.
Supported by the Shanghai Senior Citizens Foundation, the renovations include three parts: safety, barrier-free facilities and cleanliness. Wiring will be updated where needed, while the heating system, water pipes, door lock, broken glass and more will be checked and replaced if necessary.
Construction workers will also install safety rails in the bathrooms, replace flooring with non-slip surfaces and renovate the kitchen to make life easier for the occupants.
Workers will also paint the walls and furniture, replace old appliances and make some cabinets to decorate the flats.
Initiated in 2012, 352 households in hardship have benefited from the project, including 82 this year.
鈥淏efore rebuilding the flat, my mother couldn鈥檛 even take a shower when the weather got cold,鈥 says the daughter of Shi Shengdi. 鈥淭he lights were very unstable, which made it difficult to go to the bathroom at night. And since we couldn鈥檛 afford a range hood, every time we cooked there would be a lot of smoke in the kitchen.鈥
Her mother Shi, 96, had a stroke and lives off the basic living allowance.
For the family, the renovation of their flat is making a huge difference in their quality of life. Shi鈥檚 apartment now has sliding doors in the bathroom, lights that work, a range hood in the kitchen and refurbished floors.
鈥淚t鈥檚 clean and tidy like a new home,鈥 the daughter says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 nice that my mother can live much more comfortably and it will be easier for us to take care of her. It鈥檚 a huge change.鈥
