Retired doctor still making most of her medical skills

MENG Lijuan was a doctor with more than 40 years’ experience before retiring. Now, aged 74, she’s still using her knowledge and skills to help others in her Changning District community.

A graduate of the 4th Military Medical University, Meng worked at the 85th Hospital of the People’s Liberation Army.

In her residential community, Meng does her best to help seniors and children who get sick, as well as answering questions regarding medicines and health in general.

The seniors in the Lane 1220, Huashan Road community are her priority and for years she’s been taking care of those in need.

When seniors need to go to hospital, Meng will accompany them and reassure them if their family members are busy at work.

Every Tuesday is the community hospital’s visiting service day to the neighborhood.

Occasionally, doctors taking blood pressure are inundated with patients, and Meng came to help when she heard about it.

She spends her Friday mornings taking questions from residents.

Some residents also come to her with health examination reports for explanations and advice.

Meng also hosts health-related seminars for seniors, including basic medical knowledge.

Although very much a senior herself, Meng has no intention of slowing down and cutting back her schedule.

“I chose to be a doctor, and I’ll always be a doctor,” she said.
