Running club finds everything it wants and needs for races in Chongming

THE Chongming Sports Bureau and 550 Running Group has co-organized a variety of runs in Chenjia Town on December 21.
The runs are designed to cater to various levels of athletes with a half-marathon, 10km and 5km health runs organized along with a 3km Happy Run for newbies to the sport. The event has attracted more than 2,000 runners from four countries and regions and was led by Bai Xue and Ding Changqin, members of the national women’s marathon team.
Helen Li says she and some EMBA students started 550 Running Group to promote a healthier lifestyle. Li says she went running at 5:50am every morning and eventually more people started joining. At 5:50am every day in Shanghai, 550 Running Group members meet at Century Park’s Gate 2 and go for a jog. Now, 550 groups are popular in many cities in China, the US, Japan and Australia.
“Running in China’s 100 most beautiful villages has long been dream,” says Li. “Many marathons are held in the cities. I want to take runners into nature so they can enjoy beautiful scenery.”
She says Chongming Island ticks off every item on her checklist since it has beautiful natural scenery, somewhat cleaner air and less traffic.
The club also says it held a number of runs on the island in October. The runs started in Luhua Town and attracted nearly 600 participants from many cities including Beijing, Dalian, Qingdao and Nanchang.

Changjiang Tunnel-Bridge Expressway — Chenhai Road — Chenjia Town
By bus: Shenchong No. 3 Line starts from Wenshui Road in Zhabei District. Shenchong No. 6 Line starts from Jufeng Road in Pudong. The terminal station is South Gate Pier.
By ferry: Take Metro Line 3 to Baoyang Road Pier. Boats depart every 30 minutes from 6:30am to 5:30pm.
