Tong Ren doctor honored with medical award
Mao Aiwu is a recipient of the 6th Chinese Medical Doctor Award, the country’s highest honor for doctors. Mao is the director of the cancer interventional diagnostic and treatment center at Changning District’s Tong Ren Hospital and a pioneer in using radiology in cancer treatment.
In the early 1990s, Mao gained attention within the Chinese medical community for his experimental use of stents — medical devices used to widen narrow cavities — on patients with late-stage cancer and liver disease. Indeed, his treatment plans have been credited with saving several patients who were believed to have been terminal cases.
Since becoming a doctor, Mao has spent countless hours studying and practicing new procedures. Over the course of his career, he has performed and lead over 10,000 procedures and surgeries.
He is also credited with introducting and improving upon more than 50 surgical techniques, making him one of the leading experts on cancer intervention therapies.
Mao has even developed a stent named after him. This device is widely used in China as well as hospitals in Europe and North America.
The Tong Ren Hospital’s cancer interventional diagnostic and treatment center receives 1,500 patients and performs more than 3,000 surgeries annually.
Mao has received numerous honors for his contributions to medicine. He has been recognized as a Shanghai model worker, as well as one of the top 100 doctors in China, among many other accolades. He even ran as a torch bearer for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
In earlier interviews, Mao has said: “Everyone has their own dreams — mine is being 100 percent dedicated to my work and doing my part to build a harmonious bridge between doctors and patients.”
