Winter wonderland as retail sales soar

MAJOR Changning District retailers saw an increase of more than 18 percent in sales over New Year compared to the same period last year.

During the New Year holiday, covering December 31 to January 3, 23 major business enterprises achieved total sales revenue of 160 million yuan (US$25.6 million) — an 18.2 percent increase compared with the same time last year.

This adds to an already healthy retail picture in the district.

Upward trend

Between January and October, Changning achieved a 7.1 percent increase in overall retail sales compared with last year.

This trend has been partly attributed to two newly opened business and commercial centers, Arch Shanghai and The Place Hongqiao.

This upward trend continued to the end of the year with the winter sales season getting under way and major retail centers in Changning launching events and special promotions.

From November 21 to January 4, L’Avenue hosted Christmas celebrations that included a Christmas fair featuring brands from Europe. Here shoppers could find festive gifts, including handmade crafts, home decor items and children’s toys, as well as special holiday food and drink.

Shanghai Charity Foundation helped switch on the L’Avenue Christmas tree lights on December 12.

Meanwhile, Arch Shanghai has become a new business landmark in Hongqiao.

The garden mall and office building was designed by John C Portman, who is well-known for the Peachtree Center neighborhood in Atlanta, Georgia. His first project in China was designing the Shanghai Centre on Nanjing Road W. back in 1990.

Lots of activities

During the holiday season, Arch Shanghai featured an exhibition of American superheroes from films like Captain America, SpiderMan and Thor, as well as selling spin-off products.

Over at Takashimaya Shanghai, there was a Japanese fair featuring some local specialties and snacks.

On December 20, The Place Hongqiao, which had a soft opening, launched a special project focusing on “Shaun the Sheep” — the popular British animated television series.

Over three months, some 250 events related to the project are scheduled, including a stage play.

Among the busiest retail, transport and business hubs is Zhongshan Park.

Connecting Metro lines 2, 3 and 4 as well as 29 bus lines, Zhongshan Park malls include Longemont Shopping Mall, Metro Town and Zhaofeng Plaza.

And work has begun on Changning Raffles City to the west of the Zhongshan Park business zone.

Changning Raffles City is set to open by the end of 2016, further increasing the options for shoppers in the district.
