Working to eradicate pet problems
Communities in Changning are working to reduce pet problems like noise from barking and doggy doo-doo left on sidewalks and streets.
Zhoujiaqiao neighborhood’s Huacheng community started a pet club many years ago.
Members made rules and advised residents to get their dogs registered, always use a leash and mask, and bring a plastic bag to pick up poop.
They also forbid walking dogs in the sunken square and the playground, as well as during the morning and afternoon rush hours.
The community has set up two stations that provide cleaning supplies for those walking their dogs.
Stray dogs and cats cause major problems for communities as they disturb residents and breed very fast.
Hongkang Huayuan community in Xinjing Town has a pet control team. Volunteers advise residents in caring for their pets and controlling homeless ones. Sun Jinyun is one of the volunteers. She said stray cats have caused many problems but they can’t be killed so the team has started mixing contraceptives in the cat food.
They also take cats to get sterilized, but that costs a few hundred yuan for each surgery.
“Stray cats can be a problem and we hope clinics can help by performing the surgery at a lower cost. We will then take care of capturing the animals and postoperative care,” Sun said.
