Youth volunteer in the spirit of Expo
CHANGNING District youth are gearing up for World Expo 2010 and now they have an action campaign and a logo for "Youth Action for Expo."
The logo launched on Thursday features the Expo's blue mascot Haibao and adds colors of green and orange.
Green symbolizes the energy of youth and orange represents their dedication to volunteer service.
The logo will be used whenever young people take part in Expo activities.
It was designed by young volunteers from Shanghai Crystal CG Ltd.
Although the logo is recent, young people have been volunteering for quite some time, says You Yan, who heads the district's Youth Volunteer Association.
"People can easily recognize the unified symbol," You says. "With the logo, different volunteer teams can easily get together and more young people are inspired to join them spontaneously."
The launch ceremony of the logo featured a volunteer team of foreign students, white-collar workers, college and high school students, youth from quake-hit Dujiangyan, Sichuan Province, and children of migrant workers. The Sichuan young people are studying in Shanghai.
The team will ferret out spelling mistakes on city posters and signboards both in Chinese and English. They will also maintain public order and provide Expo information.
The Changning Youth League Committee has organized a contest involving around 2,000 youth league members vying for the title of best service provider. They come from 100 units in many fields, including public health, catering, tourism, police, exhibitions and logistics.
Winners will be recognized for excellent service and used as models to motivate others.
Young volunteer service bases will be set up in Changning's main public service institutions. They will form a regular volunteer service system.
The first 10 bases include homes for the disabled and facilities assisting the elderly. Services such as chatting, housework and education for the aged and disabled will be offered.
Volunteer services used to be very irregular and disorganized, especially during holidays, say officials from the district's Disabled People's Federation. Very often there were two or three volunteer teams at the same home for the elderly on the same day.
For the past 10 years, the Changning Youth League Committee has tapped young people's energy to improve life in the community.
There are 125 volunteer teams comprised of around 12,300 volunteers. They work on 51 long-term service projects and last year volunteered more than 100,000 hours to help others.
