Zhang exhibition

The Shanghai Museum of Textile and Costume is hosting an exhibition featuring works by artist and sculptor Zhang Chongren (1907-1998). When Zhang was studying at Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, he befriended Herge, the Belgian cartoonist who鈥檚 known for creating 鈥淭he Adventures of Tintin.鈥 Zhang helped Herge learn about Chinese history, culture and art. As a token of appreciation, Herge created a character based on Zhang in 鈥淭he Blue Lotus.鈥 Zhang returned to China in 1936 and hosted exhibitions of his paintings and sculptures, and established Chongren Studio. He returned to Europe in the 1980s and settled down in Paris where he died in 1998. The exhibition, which runs until May 30, includes sketches, paintings, photos and other documents.
