Carnival of fun steers cycling fans in the right direction
CYCLING fans had a chance to gather and take in the atmosphere of a world class sporting event at Xincheng Park, the start and finish point for all three stages in the Tour of Chongming.
The park hosted a carnival featuring local performances, a stunt show, handicrafts and food stalls. An amateur cycling race called Glory Ride and a Costume Ride added further spice to the carnival.
“There are nearly 4.8 million people visiting Chongming every year,” said Tang Hailong, director of Chongming County. “We will build Chongming Island as an ecological park and outdoor sports paradise.”
The amateur Glory Ride attracted a number of participants as did the Costume Ride.
Sunday’s Costume Ride started at Chongming Avenue and ran 9km along the coast line, passing Shou’an Temple and Jin’ao Hill Park before finishing at Chongming Planning Exhibition Hall. Riders dressed in different costumes like the monkey king, clowns, Super Mario and characters from The Avengers.
“It’s a lot of fun and we get some exercise,” said a participant surnamed Zhang. “The route is classic with many famous tourist attractions.”
Amateur cyclists may also be interested in pedaling in the slipstream of the pros. All three routes in the Tour of Chongming and the World Cup race will be open to riders from the end of May to June.
The island makes for a nice weekend getaway as families can pick fruit at various farms and give dragon boat racing a go.
