Four villages hoping to be favorites
FOUR local villages are vying with others from across the city in an online popularity contest. From rural retreats to sporting pursuits, Victoria Fei takes a look at what the Chongming contenders have to offer.
For those wishing to explore the best of Shanghai's rural scenery and folk culture, Chongming County provides numerous opportunities.
The eco-island's four villages - Hengsha Island, Qianwei Village, Lugang Village and Yingdong Village - are now seeking online votes in a competition against each other and another 22 villages citywide.
The 10 villages that receive the most votes on www.eastday.com by July 20 will be listed as "My Favorite Village in Shanghai."
Hengsha Island
The island is like pastoral poetry.
It has flat terrain, rivers and a developed agricultural industry. It is also known for freshwater aquaculture and marine fishing.
The sound ecological environment and water quality have much to do with local residents' green thinking.
Located at the easternmost point of the estuary of the Yangtze River, Hengsha Island is home to 33,000 residents.
Aiming at building the area into "the most beautiful rural park," the local government has been endeavoring to improve its city appearance and upgrade its facilities.
Shanghai Angel Bay Vacationland is the only resort on the island that is open to the public. Thirty villas, together with a main building in a European style, create an exotic feel.
An artificial lake of 100,000 square meters features various yachts.
The venue is also home to the first waterfront golf-driving range in east China. For go-karting enthusiasts, a track nearby with a total length of 820 meters brings excitement.
More satisfaction comes from sampling the local food with rural flavors or going fishing.
Qiu Shuihua, chief executive of Hengsha Island, says that the island's ecological environment has nurtured 12 residents over 100 years old.
"It is a paradise for people to seek recreation and peace," Qiu says.
Qianwei Village
The village only has a history of 40 years and is home to 283 families.
Its fame as a hot destination for rural tourism is rooted deep in its "close-to-nature" approach.
It allows visitors to try local cuisine and live with rural families, pick fruit and vegetables at local gardens and even do farming.
The village can provide dining service to 5,000 people at a time, as well as accommodation to 3,000 guests.
Since the launch of the Changjiang Tunnel-Bridge in late 2009, it receives an average daily visit of 15,200 people.
To discover more about Chongming's rural life, visitors can learn handicrafts such as spinning and weaving, working on a stone mill and making rice dumplings from local farmers.
Integrating the science and technology of modern agriculture with education and recreation functions, the village boasts an education base where petrified wood, stone collections and root sculptures are displayed.
Lugang Village
The village in Luhua Town is best known as the host for the National Cricket Fighting Championship and Chongming Orange Festival.
In the past five years, 60 cricket-fighting teams from across the country have competed here. The number of visitors to the championship hits 12,000 each year.
Last year, 100,000 people visited the village, creating a revenue of 3.5 million yuan (US$540,557).
Around 700,000 yuan has been invested in improving supporting facilities for tourism by the local government.
Another key source of income for local farmers is growing oranges. In 2010, the output value of the village's orange industry reached more than 18 million yuan.
With the opening of the Changjiang Tunnel-Bridge, downtown residents have found it easier and more convenient to pick oranges and orchards.
It takes only 90 minutes to reach the village from the Pudong New Area, by crossing the new tunnel under the Yangtze River to Changxing Island.
Lugang Village, with a total population of 1,646, faces Mingzhu Resort in the east and Xisha Wetland in the south. It is advantageous in its location and easily draws crowds.
Yingdong Village
The village is located at the southeast of Chongming Island. With 76 families and a population of 202, it is known as a hot fishing spot.
Since 2001, the village has planned a path of sustainable development and attached great importance to the combination of "agricultural and fishing tourism."
It has developed an eco-tourism project called "Happy Fishing" and built it into a special tourism brand in the city's suburban areas.
Newcomers to the island can first visit the Museum of Village History and Museum of Fishing Gear to get a brief idea of local culture.
After fishing at its rows of fish ponds, visitors can enjoy other interesting activities such as cock fighting and sheep fighting.
Nowadays, 32 villas have been completed to provide accommodation services.
