Success for groups that innovate

SHANGHAI Special Wire and Cable Group, medium in production scale, is speeding up technical innovation that enables it to expand into domestic and overseas markets.

The group's output value last year reached 134 million yuan (US$21 million), an increase of more than 29 percent, year on year. It has been honored as a Shanghai Famous Brand and its wires and cables have been honored as Shanghai Famous and Quality Products.

The group is also awarded the title of Fengxian Innovative Pioneer.

In recent years, Shanghai Special has expanded to other provinces and set up research and development centers both in the city and in Qidong, Jiangsu Province.

The group provides 86 series with more than 50,000 kinds of wires and cables, including cross-linked cables, power cables, cables for inverters, silicon rubber cables and many others.

Its products are used in fields such as electric power, chemical engineering, oil drilling, metallurgy, maritime industries, construction, railways and nuclear power.

Its headquarters, production centers and sales outlets are separate. Headquarters is in the SME Business Park in Fengxian's Nanqiao Town; the factories are in the Shanghai Industrial Development Area and in Qidong, Jiangsu. It has more than 160 sales outlets and offices across China.

By selling both in the outlets and online, Shanghai Special has grabbed a large market share. Its products are exported to more than 20 countries and regions in Southeast Asia, Africa and the Middle East. It provides on-site technical support to clients.

Shanghai Special emphasizes technological innovation. The group has established strategic cooperation with Shanghai Jiaotong University, China University of Science and Technology and the Chinese Academy of Sciences to develop new materials, new skills and new formulas.

At the same time, Shanghai Special accepts student interns from the China University of Science and Technology and post doctoral graduates of Shanghai Jiaotong University.

Shanghai Wanxiang Wood Group, a Fengxian-based company that makes use of recycled wood materials to produce laminated floors, is taking an eco-green path to expand its production while reducing the energy consumption efficiently.

The factory is renovated with energy-saving equipment on the production lines, which can save about 20 percent electricity. Its tailor-made boiler saves more than 180 tons of coal each year. Early this year, the group installed over 80 energy-saving light bulbs in each of its workshop.

The staff workers are required to note down the energy consumption statistics of each machine they operate everyday. Then it will be reported and analyzed during the annual group meetings by the end of the day. If an obvious fluctuation on the consumption index occurs, the technical support department will work out a new energy-saving plan.

Last year Wanxiang's output value reached 190 million yuan, a 17.4 percent increase from the previous year, while its energy consumption per 10,000 yuan of output value was 0.819 ton of coal, a drop by 9.7 percent.

By the end of 2015 (the country's 12th "five-year plan"), the wood group is going to reduce the energy consumption by 20 percent.
