11 new bus routes
JIADING District introduced 11 new bus routes last year with the launch of the No. 4 Anting line on December 30.
A bus route three-year plan adopted in 2007 has been completed one year earlier than planned.
"There are 21 bus stops along the No. 4 Anting line," said Sun Jinhai, a resident in Zhaoxiang Village. "It's a lot more convenient."
A total of 3.1 million passengers benefited from the new bus lines last year. For example, No. 1 Jiangqiao bus line has a daily average of 2,000 passengers.
People in Dengjiajiao Village in Huangdu Town now have only a five-minute walk to the nearest bus stop, down from 20 minutes, after the No.1 Huangdu route was launched.
Last year, the local government and public transport enterprises invested 59.95 million yuan (US$8.767million) to improve the district's public transport system. Eighty-nine new buses were put into operation and 50 old ones were replaced.
Among the 86 bus routes within the district, 48 managed by local bus firms boasted a passenger flow of 40 million last year, a 10 percent increase compared with 2007.
The district's transport authority has recently made a plan to adjust 30 bus routes and launch four new ones this year.
