800 years of history at your doorstep

Nearly 800 years of history has left Jiading with abundant cultural resources including the key national protected cultural site Jiading Confucian Temple and the national intangible cultural heritage Jiading bamboo carving.

Besides a handful well-known public cultural sites such as Jiading Museum and Han Tianheng Art Museum, there are more folk art museums and galleries hidden in this historic area, waiting for you to discover and experience.

For martial arts fans

If you’re a fan of traditional martial arts, Shanghai Jiading Martial Arts School is the place for you. Its exhibition hall displays historic exhibits about martial arts.

You can also learn about the history of the military imperial examination system dated back to as early as the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), learning about the content, format, and development of the exams.

A featured exhibit is a book written in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). It was a must-read book for those who wanted to take the military examination at that time. A school official purchased the book at an auction.

The school offers martial arts courses every summer.

For serious practitioners, it also teaches traditional styles such as Wubu Quan and Luohan Quan martial arts.

Piano in the fast lane

Streamlined with a high-end sports car lacquer finish, the Schimmel “Pegasus” piano is made from 300-year-old trees and has a price tag of over 2 million yuan (US$320,000).

The piano, dubbed the “Ferrari,” is one of 10 instruments on display in the showroom of Shanghai AXL Musical Instruments in Jiading’s Xuhang Town.

German industrial designer Luigi Colani designed three parts of a piano into a united piece, using transparent glass fiber reinforced plastics.

Besides the pianos, the showroom also houses more than 2,500 musical instruments that include a number of rarely seen pieces.
