A Mexican who dances for joy in the old streets

EVERY time Ansony Cobian, a 28-year-old Mexican, walks the old streets of Jiading District, he enjoys the peaceful feeling.

"I've completely fallen in love with Jiading, a place of profound culture," Cobian says.

At the end of 2006, Cobian was working for the Mexican government, dealing with steel exports. He was first sent to Hangzhou to work at that time. There he learned Chinese at Zhejiang University.

A year later, he was sent to Shanghai and studied Chinese at Fudan University.

"Hangzhou is very beautiful and an ideal place to live," he says. "In contrast, Shanghai offers a modern touch. I like both cities very much."

Cobian admits that he feels a lot of stress in Shanghai as the big city is really fast paced and developing rapidly. However, when he came across Jiading District, he discovered the tranquil side of the city.

"I saw seniors doing morning exercises. I saw roads paved with stones. I saw the ancient Fahua Pagoda," he says. "I thought to myself how great it would be if I could live and work here."

His dream came true. In August last year, he resigned from his job in Mexico and registered a new company in Jiading, doing business in steel.

"If I continued in my former work, I would probably have to return to my country soon," Cobian says. "Only by starting my own business here can I realize my dream of staying in China."

And he fell in love with a girl from Shanghai. They have decided to hold their wedding soon.

Being a motorcycle enthusiast, he goes to annual MOTO GP in Jiading whenever he can. Formula One is one of his favorite sports.

"It's really entertaining watching games at Shanghai International Circuit," he says. "In fact, the district has more to attract me, including nanxiang xiaolong (steamed buns). All my friends like them a lot."

Cobian likes traveling. He has been to many places including Beijing, Harbin, Hainan, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Macau and Nanjing.

"China has many beautiful tourist destinations that make me hardly tear myself away," he says. "However, having stayed in Jiading for such a long time now, I have a special feeling towards the district. I hope I can stay here forever."

After Mexico was hit by the H1N1 flu, Cobian informed his mother in his hometown that the Chinese people were friendly to Mexicans and were carrying out the best treatments possible for those who needed to be isolated.
