A feast of culture opens to the public

ADDITIONAL new sites of three major cultural venues in Jiading District will open tomorrow, offering new options for local people to read, stroll and get immersed in the district's history and culture. The new venues are the Jiading New Museum, Jiading New Library and Jiading New Cultural Center. Their existing "old" venues will remain in service. Jiading News reporter gets a glimpse of the new facilities ahead of their opening.

New Museum

Covering an area of 9,600 square meters, Jiading New Museum greets visitors with its traditional Chinese style gate. Following the clear stream from the Qiuxiapu Garden, one will come across the new museum connecting the garden with the urban life.

The history hall of the new museum records the 800-year history of Jiading with over 200 exhibits and more than 300 historical photos.

The feature exhibition hall will present two heavyweight exhibitions from tomorrow showcasing bronze sculptures of four animal heads originating from the Yuanmingyuan Imperial Palace and 70 precious treasures donated by renowned collector Zhang Bihan and his family.

New Library

With picturesque views of Yuanxiang Lake, Jiading New Library covers an area of around 15,000 square meters.

The library has large reading area including rooms for sight impaired people and children.

The first 200,000 books are already on the shelves and 200 outdoor chairs with sunshades are available for readers to enjoy the beautiful scenery while reading their favorite books.

The library has adopted the latest RFID (radio-frequency identification) equipment, and there is an electronic chip in each book.

Readers can easily find books by simply inputting the titles in computers.

A music saloon in the library equipped with more than 30 computers and players are good choice for music lovers, where they can borrow blu-ray discs.

New Culture Center

With a total area of 10,000 square meters, Jiading New Culture Center consists of a theater of 500 seats, an exhibition room, four classrooms and three rehearsal rooms for traditional Chinese music orchestras, operas and dancing groups.

To better protect Jiading's intangible cultural heritage, the center has a special display area exhibiting the district's renowned heritage including bamboo carving and grass weaving of Xuhang Town.
