A modern city takes shape that has something for everyone
Great changes are taking place in Jiading District as the local government spares no effort to build Jiading New City into a modern area, a better place to live and a more suitable place to do business.
Jiading New City has become one of the local government's focal points on the road to a prosperous future.
Jiading New City covers an area of 220 square kilometers and will have a total population of 800,000 to 1 million.
It is composed of three sections: main city, Anting Town and Nanxiang Town.
The main city, covering an area of 120 square kilometers and with a planned population of 500,000, will be a center for politics, economy and culture.
Nanxiang will endeavor to improve residential facilities, as well as facilities for business and trade, while Anting is committed to develop the auto industry.
By 2010, the new city's urban infrastructure will be completed and by 2012, the new city will take shape. Its ecological and natural touch together with scientific and technological elements will be ideal for living and doing business.
The new city boasts advantages in convenient transport.
In addition to a transport net formed by Shanghai-Jiading Expressway, Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway, Suburban Ring Road, Jiading-Jinshan Highway, Cao'an Highway, Shanghai-Yixing Highway, Shanghai-Nanjing Railway and Shanghai-Hangzhou Railway, a new expressway is being planned to link the new city with Hongqiao Airport and the Hongqiao Transit Hub.
Metro Line 11 from Jiading District to Pudong is expected to open this year. It will also reduce the time to travel between the district and the city's downtown.
The plan of Jiading New City demonstrates the advanced urban design concept and absorbs the essence of the district's history of more than 800 years.
The old town of Jiading looks like the Chinese character shen, abbreviation for Shanghai. The look is formed by the thousand-year-old Qihe River and Hengli River running in the district.
Meanwhile, the new city is designed in the shape of blossoming lotus, reflecting the economic boom in Shanghai since the reform and opening up policy launched in 1978.
According to the plan, supporting facilities totaling 100,000 square meters in floor space will be constructed to include an opera house, cinema, library, art center, youth activities center, and leisure and sports area to satisfy residents' demands for leisure and cultural activities.
Modern architectural styles will mingle with the historic and cultural features of Jiading. Buildings such as the library, museum and opera house will be designed to showcase Jiading's strengths in science, education and culture.
The ecological and environmentally friendly new city will also feature "a lake every 1,000 meters and a green belt every 100 meters."
A total of 18 lakes, of which Yuanxiang Lake is the biggest artificial one, form a water network in the new city.
The total area of Yuanxiang Lake scenic spot is 60.89 hectares and the total investment is expected to reach 230 million yuan (US$33.6 million).
The shape of the lake is similar to the Chinese character hai (sea), which stands for the new city's tolerance to different cultures. Around the lake are facilities such as a hotel, clubs and a theater, forming a business and recreational area.
To enjoy more Shanghai flavor, visitors can go to Shanghai International Circuit, famous for its close look to the Chinese character shang. Located in the west of Jiading New City, it represents passion and vitality.
As the circuit matches the highest standards in the world, it attracts tourists from all over the world, and contributes greatly to the development of the service industry in the district.
Formula One races and the MotoGP World Championship, which are televised in more than 200 countries and regions, lead to the area becoming a focal point of the global media.
Shanghai International Circuit is next to Shanghai International Auto City in Anting.
The auto city serves to cover the whole auto industry chain and is the most important pillar industry in Jiading New City.
All in all, Jiading New City will offer every visitor a fresh feel -- excitement brought by the speed of development and tranquility brought by scenery of lakes and green spaces.
