A passion with a cutting edge
"IT'S all for fun, for recreation, and for a hobby," said Yang Zubai, a member of the China Association of Calligraphers and the Xiling Seal Club, the earliest seal club in China.
Yet he is not the only one in Jiading addicted to seal cutting. Many others have found much happiness in the ancient art.
Yang was introduced to seal cutting when he was serving in the People's Liberation Army.
"Accidentally, I turned a hobby into a career," he said.
In 1984, he took part in the literature and art course organized by the Air Force in Harbin. It was during this course that he first came to understand seal cutting and developed a love for it.
Passion is the driving force behind seal cutting, he said. With passion, one can cut his or her dearest feelings into stone; and with passion, a seal cutter can work around the clock without feeling tired.
Without passion, however, a seal cutter may be reluctant to take up cutting tools for days or even for months
But Yang had passion. He apprenticed himself first to Han Tianheng and then to Xu Zhenglian, both seal cutting masters. Through their help, he developed a style of his own. His works have been repeatedly selected for national exhibitions, and his name has been entered into the Directory of Contemporary Chinese Seal Cutters.
The multi-volume publication "China's Top 100 Seal Cutters" has a whole section devoted to him.
Yang looks at himself as an everyman addicted to seal cutting, which brings him a richer life in retirement, more friends, and greater peace of the mind.
