A rope and a can make the senior's life easier
ZHAO Shifang is a senior who lives alone in Jule Community in Jiading New Town.
He loves to read newspapers and used to go downstairs every day to fetch the newspaper. But in recent years his lumbar disease made him painful to go down stairs.
A good neighbor of his called Dai Baogen learned about his situation and helped him out.
He tied an empty milk powder can to a long rope. Every morning, Zhao lowers the can from the third floor where he lives. When it touches the ground it makes noise and Dai understands what he should do. He then gets the newspaper and puts it in the can, waggling the rope to signal Zhao that his newspaper is ready.
Zhao then pulls the can back up to his floor. Sometimes Dai also helps Zhao buy vegetables and fruits, pay water, electricity and gas bills.
