A summer rendezvousin Xuhang Town

AT the end of May, the early summer comes. The birds chime and flowers blossom. Sometimes the parks and green areas in the city are not enough to quench a romantic heart. Xuhang Town can help soothe jangled nerves and calm one's mind. There is much to see and do in Xuhang including checking out a sheep breeding base and an agricultural garden famous for protecting the endangered Chinese sturgeon. But while seeing the sights, don't forget to stop and feel the fresh breeze of this quiet and pure land.

Xuhang Grass Weaving

The Xuhang Grass Weaving Exhibition Hall and Xuhang Grass Weaving Studio are on the third floor of the Culture and Sports Center of Xuhang Town. The exhibition hall displays around 50 grass weaving products made by skilled craftsmen including some award-winning pieces. Some were woven for special occasions such as the 2008 Beijing Olympics and World Expo Shanghai 2010.

Every July is the harvest season of yellow grass (cyperus exaltatus for scientific name) in Xuhang. The grass is split and dyed. Craftsmen then weave the grass into some beautiful daily necessities for sale.

The golden fish corridor in Wanjin Ornamental Fish Base is 350 meters long. There is a pond to breed fish that will be exported. During the World Expo Shanghai 2010, dozens of precious golden fish were showcased at the world fair for a week.

There are about 32 ponds displaying the rare golden fish. For example, one pond showcases the 96 golden fish whose fry was purchased from Japan at 80,000 yuan (US$12,647) each in 2003. Some of the fry have grown to full size and meet quality standards in Japan. These fish are in demand in Japan, Europe and the US.

The Chinese sturgeon area is another highlight. The endangered fish is a large migratory species. It is also the oldest existing fish species in the world and is known as "a living fossil."

The temporary nurturing base for Chinese sturgeon has contributed much to the preservation of the species. The base provides visitors a good opportunity to see these strange-looking creatures and learn more about them.

Wanjin Ornamental Fish Base, covering an area of 11.7 hectares, also has a museum and an agricultural garden.
