A tradition that welcomes the blues

BLUEPRINT cloth is a specialty of southern China. It used to be popular in ancient times but it is seldom seen in recent years.

However in recent years, this traditional cloth seems to be undergoing a revival.

It has been proved that Jiading was the cradle of blueprint cloth and it has become an intangible cultural heritage of the country recently.

Blueprint cloth has a 1,700-year history. It is made by dying white cotton cloth indigo blue. It originated in the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220 AD) and became popular in the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. It was mainly made in places where the textile industry was well developed, such as Shanghai, Anhui and Jiangsu provinces. The blueprint cloth of Suzhou was the most famous and was called Su Yin.

The Beijing Historical Museum has a collection of blueprint material from the Ming Dynasty. In the late Qing Dynasty, the blueprint cloth of Tianmen in Hubei Province was well-known and had an annual output of 600,000 bolts.

The patterns on blueprint cloth are usually continuous and complex.

As a result of the printing techniques, the blue-and-white patterns are delicate and regular, and many of them have auspicious patterns in the folk tradition.
