Abundance of culture at Poly Grand Theater
RESIDENTS have enjoyed a feast of cultural performances at the Shanghai Poly Grand Theater in Jiading District.
Founded two years ago, the theater has witnessed a number of noted cultural figures coming to present their shows, including actress Liu Xiaoqing, comedian Chen Peisi, pianist Li Yundi and the New York Philharmonic.
One of the recent highlights at the theater was contemporary dance “Under Siege,” directed by famed Chinese dancer Yang Liping, also known as “The Peacock Princess of China.”
“Under Siege” presented the life-and-death struggle between Emperor Liu Bang and War Lord Xiang Yu during the Qin and Han dynasties.
The audience was first amazed by 20,000 pairs of glistening scissors hanging high over the stage, like the sword of Damocles.
When the battle began, the stage was flooded with “blood” made of pieces of red feather.
Yang incorporated elements of other styles such as Peking Opera, kung fu and Chinese Orchestra into the performance.
“Peking Opera held a rather high position in traditional Chinese culture,” Yang said. “It never ceases to keep up with time. I find myself obliged to promote it.”
Yang’s another dance performance, “The Peacock,” will be staged at the theater in December.
Residents can also watch Irish dancing there on December 31, Russian State Ballet’s Swan Lake on September 26 and The Nutcracker on September 27. A Chinese version of Broadway musical “The Sound of Music” will be staged at the theater at 159 Baiyin Road in Jiading on September 3.
