Academy spreads knowledge of Chinese culture

Every Saturday morning, the Qiuxiapu Academy holds a class in Chinese folk culture at the Jiading Confucius Temple. This year, calligraphy and seal-cutting will be added.

The academy is a Chinese folk culture research organization and an educational institution with a faculty of dozens of renowned professors and scholars.

Founded in Jiading in September 2009, the academy has compiled teaching materials from classic works of Chinese traditional history and culture for juveniles, and organized parent-and-child training camps in Chinese traditional culture and the Shanghai Confucius Culture Festival.

On the first day of the training program this semester, the teacher gave each child a class name with a Chinese character of “Cheng,” meaning honest, following the naming rules for different groups of students.

Then the teacher taught the students to give a salute to each other in a traditional way, making a bow with hands folded in front.

Teacher Li Nairu said traditional Chinese culture is seen everywhere in life.

Li said when we teach children Chinese traditional culture, we should ask them to do what they learn.

In this way, children will be more interested in studying Chinese folk culture and have a deeper understanding of the essence of the folk culture.

In the following classes, Li instructed the children to understand the Chinese ancient poets in simulated scenes besides recitals.

Qiuxiapu Academy plans to set up a library with 10,000 books about Chinese traditional culture, a public Chinese folk culture lecture hall and an educational research base.

After three years of efforts, the academy has published a set of 24 volumes of Chinese folk culture teaching materials suitable for grade one to grade 12 students, edited by teachers from more than 20 domestic colleges.

The academy also plans to spend another 10 to 20 years publishing a series of Chinese folk culture teaching materials, textbooks and audiovisual products for students and the public.

Expats who are interested in Chinese traditional culture can bring their children to take part in the academy’s classes.

Public class time: Every Saturday, 9am-11am

Address: Jiading Confucius Temple, 183 Nandajie Street
