Amateur choir proves professor wrong

RESIDENTS of the Xincheng Road Community are enjoying a rich cultural life, with Chinese art, music and heritage coming to their doorstep.

The community's Xingchen Choir, now in its 10th year, often gives local concerts. The 48-member choir was honored with a show at World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, where it performed the song "Expo, the Sea of the Flowers."

The song was composed by Guan Wei, who works for the community's culture center. Four months ago, Guan was told by Shi Lin, a professor from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, that the song was too difficult for amateur choirs to perform.

The Xingchen Choir was determined to prove him wrong. Its members held countless rehearsals to perfect their performance. When Professor Shi heard the song again, he couldn't believe his ears and said that their performance was as good as that given by the choir of the city's level.

Apart from chorus, the choir's repertory also draws on Chinese opera, poetry and drama. All these art forms have roots in the community. For example, the community's cultural center has sponsored performances of Suzhou pingtan, an art form of storytelling and ballad singing.
