Art gala marks gallery’s anniversary
The Han Tianheng Art Gallery is celebrating its fifth anniversary with a series of exhibitions including paintings, calligraphy and seal-engraving through November 18.
Some 270 pieces of artworks by Han and his 166 students are on display , highlighting changes based on tradition. So, what visitors will see is a combination of traditional and modern styles.
Han, a renowned calligrapher and seal-engraving master, has held many exhibitions since 2004.
“Different to science and technology, the development of art is required to inherit the tradition,” said Han at the opening ceremony of the current exhibition. “You can see the paintings of Wu Changshuo and Qi Baishi on display at the same time. Nobody can substitute the other one just because new styles of paintings keep appearing.
“It is not correct to inherit the tradition just for inheriting, like the ancient people. We have to continue being creative. As a result, innovation is of great importance in the art area, but innovation is not a simple process. It depends on multiple factors,” Han said.
After careful consideration, Han picked 245 works from his students including 60 calligraphy pieces, 27 paintings, 152 examples of engraving and two photographs of photo shooting. Han also took out 20 of his own pieces to display, including painting “The Raining Picture of A Pavilion in Jiaxing” and a collection of paintings featuring flowers and birds.
Meanwhile, around 70 paintings and calligraphy works by artists including Lu Yanshao, Cheng Shifa, Lai Chusheng, Xie Zhiliu, Tang Yun and Chen Peiqiu are on show. Their paintings are credited with starting a new chapter in China’s modern art history.
