Artist portrays better conditions
CHEN Danqing was born in Shanghai and was admitted as a graduate student at the Oil Painting Department of China's Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1978. Chen won his early fame in 1980 through a series depicting Tibetan landscapes and people.
His realistic painting is considered a milestone that broke the dominance of Russian art in China. In 1982, Chen migrated to the United States as an independent artist. In 2000, he returned to China and opened his studio. Chen is a renowned art critic and has published several books.
Chen described his relationship with Jiading District through "fate". Early in 1965, his father brought him fishing to Jiangqiao. At that time, it was still countryside with pools and paddy fields. In 1968, his friend Zheng Xueming took him to paint the portrait of Chairman Mao in nearby Nanxiang.
Chen said that everything changed when he came to Jiading this time. Everything was new, yet after viewing the blueprints of the new town, he said that it was good to include kindergartens, primary schools, a theater and art museum. Since his return nine years ago, Chen says he no longer attacks new construction because facts proved that the living condition of the residents really have changed.
"The emerging of new high-rises will also bring the new intellectuals. There is still potential," he said. "The hardware here is perfect, and the cultural aura is open. Because Han Han, a controversial figure, can voice his opinion here, it indicates an open and friendly cultural ambience here. There could be all kinds of possibilities for the future, but one thing is certain, there will be no forbidden zone."
