Athletes take home the gold!
JIADING District athletes surpassed even their own record by scooping up 38 gold medals, as of November 15, at the 14th Shanghai Sports Meet. Among them, Jiading's youth team has taken home 31 gold medals.
In the game of "tug of war," 13 teams from across the city competed.
Jiading's team won championships in the men's 600-kilogram and 680-kilogram classes, and in the women's 480-kilogram and 560-kilogram classes.
"In the men's 600-kilogram class, we conquered the former champion Baosteel team," said Shen Jianhua, one of the athletes. "Owing to overweight of our team, we had only seven men fighting against their eight." Shen credited the success to the hard and daily practice of the team.
"Even more amazing were our two women's teams, who were formed less than two months ago," he said. "They won two golds!"
"It's the first time that athletes from Jiading have participated in five events: fencing, swimming, handball, hockey and football,'' said Liu Yong, an official from the Jiading Sports Bureau.
"On the very first day," he said proudly, "we won a gold medal in swimming."
Jiading's track and field team ranked third with 12 gold medals, 9 silvers, and 8 bronzes, following Minhang District and the Pudong New Area. It was the best score that the district had ever achieved in track and field.
Yang Yang, director of the Jiading Sports Bureau, said the district will continue to promote fitness and sports among residents, which in turn will help develop the physical quality of Jiading people as well as top-flight athletes for the future.
