Auto city jumps into fast lane
TO celebrate the 10th anniversary of Shanghai International Auto City, a celebration themed "Gratitude, Inspiration and Leap" was held recently.
For the past 10 years, investment in fixed assets by the city has reached more than 70 billion yuan (US$11 billion). The auto city used to cover only 68 square kilometers, but now has expanded to almost 100 square kilometers.
Civil infrastructure construction and ecological environment have been improved continuously and, breakthroughs have been made in the six functional areas such as auto manufacturing, research and development, and trade. As a result, its international fame and influence have been raised.
The auto city is now home to 137 manufacturing enterprises. The production and the sales of the vehicles in 2010 both surpassed 1 million units. The total output value of auto city's spare parts reached 43.46 billion yuan.
Three public R&D centers with international competitiveness include a national motor vehicle inspection center, a wind tunnel laboratory and a new-energy vehicle engineering center. The centers enable the area to develop either a whole car or auto parts, either traditional vehicles or new-energy vehicles. Meanwhile, it has shifted from traditional manufacturing to R&D, design, inspection and testing, and standard setting.
Thus far 26 technology research centers with more than 10,000 employees have relocated to the auto city or close by.
The city has also attracted sales and service institutions. About 20 dealerships have settled here and their annual sales volume accounted for about 10 percent of the city's total.
For the past eight years, Formula One Chinese Grand Prix has been held successfully at the auto city, attracting more than 1 million spectators. Auto-related cultural activities and exhibitions have also made the venue a hot tourism spot.
The development of new-energy cars will continue to grow in the near future. By the end of 2015, the capacity of the new-energy cars in the auto city will reach 20,000 vehicles and the total output of the new-energy auto parts will hit 12 billion yuan.
