Auto parts supplier adapts to working culture
Throughout its four years in China, the business of MANN+HUMMEL Filter Co. Ltd has been driven at the speed of a Ferrari. That's no surprise really, as the plant manager is named Luiz Henrique Ferrari.
The global auto parts supplier has amassed 12,400 employers at divisions in 41 countries and regions in its 69-year history.
It started to build its China plant last year in Jiading, a district which will have one of the largest auto parts production centers in Asia.
Construction is completed and operations will start in March.
"It is a fresh new start for me and the company," says Ferrari, a Brazilian. He has worked in nearly every business unit of MANN+HUMMEL in Brazil.
In 2004, Ferrari ventured abroad and decided to settle in China without hesitation, as "the company's future is in China."
He sensed cultural differences soon after his arrival in 2005. He once gave male employees green hats with the company's logo as gifts, but they felt awkward wearing them as in Chinese slang, green hat means a man's wife is not loyal to him.
"Later I learned the negative meaning of wearing a green hat and it was so funny," Ferrari says with a smile. Now he has a clearer understanding of China's culture and the meanings behind numbers.
Formula 1 racing and soccer are Ferrari's favorite sports. He is a fan of Ferrari, the F1 team and AC Milan.
As a manager, he loves to share time with employees by organizing soccer games with them. To him, "sports and games bring a team closer."
Recognizing talent is crucial to the company and Ferrari holds that every capable employee should get deserved promotion.
On arriving at the Shanghai company, he found a talented young man and wanted to promote him.
But the man refused and thought the chance should go to more experienced workers.
"It confused me because I'd never had this experience before," Ferrari said. "Since then I've been firmer and given a chance to anyone with capabilities and strong performance, irrespective of length of service or age."
"Since moving to Jiading, the company is in great need of talent, especially local," Ferrari says. Human resources manager Hou Jiaqian adds that "localization of talent is a must-have for every international company."
The company is hiring 100 new employees, 30 in R&D, sales and marketing, logistics and finance.
