Auto refitting market booms as car owners seek individualism
THE three-day 2012 China (Shanghai) International Auto Upgrading and Related Products Exhibition and China (Shanghai) Auto Salon (CAS) was wrapped up in Shanghai Automobile Exhibition Center on October 1.
The fair caught more attention than a year ago as industry insiders said the demand has boomed for refitting vehicles in China.
Nearly 40,000 visitors swarmed to the fair in Jiading's Anting Town to watch a car parade, drifting performances and vote for the best modified vehicles during the event.
Chen Wei, from Shaoxing City in Zhejiang Province, said he has been keen on modified vehicles for nearly 10 years and the exhibition has given him a chance to talk to the people with same interest.
"I feel very excited to see the vehicles on site and have learnt a lot about the latest products," he said.
Exhibitor Shen Haibin from Ningbo, another Zhejiang city, said it was a good chance for him to have conversations directly with the customers, as other auto parts exhibitions usually only attract dealers.
As more people buy cars, refitting and modification of vehicles has grown in popularity as owners seek to show off their individuality, according to industry insiders.
Individuality
"The renovation and modification of vehicles often went unnoticed among the mainstream automobile market but it has been growing steadily in recent years," said CAS's executive director En Qi.
"Domestic car buyers have evolved from just owning a car to obtaining a good car. Now they want to have a car with their personal styles," En said.
Standard or uniform vehicles are no longer enough to satisfy their needs and individualism is often achieved by refitting their automobiles, he added.
En attributed the success of the exhibition partly to choosing Anting as the location.
"Shanghai International Automobile City is already famous in the auto circle and is very suitable for hosting such an exhibition with its suitable space. Besides, the Auto Park can provide a large area for a series of outdoor activities," En said.
"The location of Jiading is also an advantage since it is just in the center of Yangtze River Delta, quite easy for car fans to drive from other provinces."
A 50,000-square-meter auto refitting culture creation center will soon be unveiled in Jiading. It is expected to attract refitting vendors and auto research institutes, as learned at the exhibition.
