Big building became canteen due to its size

THERE are many stories hidden inside the old houses in Jiading Industrial Zone.

Among them is that one was used as the public canteen 50 years ago.

With the words of "439 Zhandou Zhaoting Cun" in white on the blue number plate on the wall, the whole building is made of bricks and wood.

The existing two and a half rooms are in good repair. The wooden door, the small green tiles and the traditional Chinese elements make the building simple in structure, delicate in craftsmanship and solid in base, which is typical of the traditional countryside residential buildings in Jiading.

In front of the house there is a well and behind it is a bamboo garden.

There are several water-colored murals on the walls of the meeting-room, though half of the room has already been dismantled. The mural is about a group of ladies having their dinners happily in the people's commune, together with a flying dragon and some political-themed painting.

There is also a written poem below the dining scene, which proved that this place truly had been used as a canteen. I still vaguely remember that my mother brought me to the canteen, when I was starting to walk.

This house has a history of 85 years and was originally owned by Zhu's family. So the local people call it Zhu's Old House.

The current owner says that because the house was spacious it was chosen as a public canteen in the 1950s. At that time all the villagers were able to get dinner here without paying.
