Big ideas spring from small space
East Xuhui Jinting residential community in Juyuan New Area is using just one square meter of space to promote reading culture among local residents. A book kiosk opened to the public on November 23 after two weeks’ trial operation.
Over 300 books of various categories are placed in “Floating” book kiosk, which looks like a telephone kiosk.
It is open to all local residents and the books are shared by the property management office or residents.
Wang Sumin exchanged three children’s books with another three about child rearing, hoping to help mothers in the community.
“Sharing idle books at the kiosk can avoid resource wasting,” said Wang.
The kiosk is open from 5pm to 7pm on working days and 9am to 11am and 5pm to 7pm on weekends. A message board can record residents’ wish list.
Resident Gu Caihong said the kiosk is convenient for office workers who don’t have time to go to the library on working days.
The operation of the “Floating” book kiosk is also different from ordinary libraries and community reading rooms.
“The exchange of books can not only promote good reading habits but also strengthen communications among residents in the community,” said a staff member at the local Juyuan New Area Housing Affair Administration.
Residents can scan a QR code on the door of the kiosk to join a WeChat group comprised of book lovers in the community and share their thoughts on book content.
A message card for reviews can also be found in the last page of each book.
Another “Floating” book kiosk has opened for residents in the West Xuhui Jinting Community and more are to be established in the Juyuan New Area.
