Boji’s young football players celebrate cup success
Boji Football Club is celebrating the top in the 2017 Irena Cup football tournament, giving Jading its first national champions in the sport.
The young players started their rise to fame in division competitions held in November, which brought them to the national finals.
By defeating powerful opposition in teams from Sichuan and Zhejiang provinces, they then confronted the side representing Guizhou Province in the final. In a tough match that could have gone either way, Boji eventually emerged victorious with a 3-1 win.
Boji is the only amateur football team to have taken part in the tournament for four years in a row and twice got to the third round by defeating teams from the Chinese Football Association Cup.
Each match the team in was followed by thousands of fans, a rare thing for an amateur side.
Tang Yaodong, coach of the professional Wuhan team defeated by Boji, commented that Boji is a respectable amateur team that has much for others to learn from.
Boji Football Club was designated as a Shanghai Football Association Youth Training Base in 2014. Two years later it officially signed with Shanghai SIPG Football Club to be included in the youth training system. Now about 1,000 players, 404 of whom are registered athletes, receive training there.
