Bone marrow donor says it is his social duty
DOCTOR Chen Liang is the first bone marrow donor in Jiading District, whose hemopoietic stem cells has been transfused to a young girl, a leukemia patient in Hangzhou.
The simple act of donation from this young doctor has sparked a glimmer of life of that young girl.
Chen is a Youth League member and has worked at the pharmacy department of Waigang Town Community Health Center for several years. He is a humble and quiet person who does not attract a lot of attention.
He first entered the bone marrow donation voluntary team in 2005. In August 2010, he attended the marrow collection event launched by the Youth League Committee of the Jiading Public Health Bureau.
"Attending a marrow collection event means I could get one more chance for a bone marrow match with people in need," he said. Many people were moved by Chen's loving heart and his aspiration to help those in need.
Last September, Chen received a call from China Marrow Donor Program's Shanghai branch. He was informed that his bone marrow matched that of a 29-year-old leukemia patient. The staff member asked him if he agreed to donate the bone marrow. "I do!" After so many years of waiting, Chen was so excited at the news that he yelled "I do" again and again.
However, on his way home, Chen began to worry if his decision would be supported by his parents and wife. He hadn't told them when he first volunteered to be a donor for the China Marrow Donor Program. As expected, Chen's family was anxious about his decision as he looked thin and not strong enough. The "silent" Chen magically became very talkative at that time.
"The moment I decided to be a member of the China Marrow Donor Program, it has become my responsibility to save people's lives," Chen said. "The chance that a person's hemopoietic stem cell matches that of another is only about 1/10,000. The leukemia patient is now waiting for me to save her life."
Chen's parents were finally persuaded by his determination. They were also proud of their son's decision.
After a few days' preparation, Chen's hemopoietic stem cells were successfully collected at the bone marrow collection room of Shanghai No. 1 People's Hospital. He couldn't conceal his excitement. "My dream has finally come true," he said proudly.
Chen's stem cells were then rushed to a Hangzhou hospital. In the afternoon of that day, the stem cells were transplanted to the leukemia patient. In Chen's eyes, it was an accident to find someone else who shared the same blood as him, but helping to save this person's life was a fortunate experience.
"As a volunteer for the China Marrow Donor Program, I will encourage more and more young people to be the donors," Chen added. "I believe that many other people will join us to offer a hand to the leukemia patients and together take our social responsibilities."
