Breathing life into old factories
THERE are many old and decrepit factories in Jiading District that will be converted into either galleries, museums or entertainment centers. The factories have been shut down due to backward production capacity. Take a look at what will replace these old factories.
Occupying 56,000 square meters, the former factory of Shanghai Feilian Textile Co will be turned into an art gallery. The project will be carried out in two phases.
The first phase will include an art museum of about 10,000 square meters and cost 140 million yuan (US$21.87 million). A studio will be set up inside the museum to exhibit over 1,000 artworks created by Han Tianheng. The artist is known for his seal cuttings, paintings and calligraphy. The studio will be open free of charge.
The second phase of the project will be initiated in the second half of next year with a budget of 230 million yuan. It will include a hotel, restaurants and retail shops. Mr Qiu, who is in charge of the project, said they would try to retain the style of the factory's buildings such as the red tile roof and chimney.
Covering an area of 3,000 square meters, Shanghai Beifeng Environment Art Co Ltd, which used to be a factory producing street sculptures, now has been renovated into an art gallery. The former noisy eastern part has now become a quiet place including terraces and pavilions, while the western section features the Wutong Art Gallery with exhibition halls in different sizes. There are also a teahouse, a bar and ceramics store. Japanese artists like Kei Iwasaki often visit here.
"This place (former factory of Shanghai House Foods Co Ltd) will be turned into a large commercial and recreational center," said Ma Hongfei, head of the project. The total floor space will be 3,170 square meters, with the rebuilt area of 1,656 square meters and the newly built 1,514 square meters.
The first floor of the former factory's office has been turned into a multi-functional hall, some meeting rooms and lounges. The six rooms on the second floor have formed a restaurant, while the terrace on the top is the barbecue area. The expanded zone is a two-story building that includes a wine bar, a cigar bar and an audiovisual studio. The project is expected to be completed and open to the public at the end of this year.
