Building project award
THE Urban Planning Hall of Jiading District won an award for outstanding project management at the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Global Construction Summit in Shanghai on June 30.
Sun Jiwei, head of Jiading District and newly appointed president of CIOB China, delivered an address on urban construction practices in the realm of sustainable development. "Good architecture can light up a whole city," he said. "Highlighted by a low-carbon lifestyle, Jiading New Town has put itself firmly on the road of eco-friendly development."
He added, "This will be a multi-functional city space with vitality. We should endeavor to raise the area's enthusiasm for its future development."
Established in 1834, the UK-based Chartered Institute of Building is a body with global influence in the construction industry. It holds summits biennially. The Shanghai conference was the first to be held outside Britain.
That decision reflected recognition that China is undergoing unprecedented development and that has serious repercussions for the world's professional builders. As evidence of that interest, the construction of World Expo pavilions in Shanghai attracted the attention of the industry as a showcase of advanced architectural concepts.
The theme of the CIOB conference was "Building Better Cities, West Meets East.'' More than 300 CIOB members attended the event. Keynote speakers included John Prescott, former deputy prime minister of the UK, and Yi Jun, chairman of the China State Construction Engineering Corp. Li Shirong, the first female non-British CIOB president, participated in a panel discussion about the role of women in the construction industry.
