Bus passengers getting a great deal

While the actual cost of each bus ride in Jiading is 2.92 yuan (47 US cents), passengers are charged just 1.51 yuan on average, according to Jiading鈥檚 transport authority.
Last year, the Jiading district government spent more than 100 million yuan in supporting its local bus services. With the financial support and its own income from other projects, the bus company in Jiading is managing to make the daily operation sustainable.
Even though it has been hard for the company to make a profit, the Jiading government has insisted on its strategy of 鈥淏us First鈥 since the district鈥檚 reform in bus operation in 2007, which means ticket prices of most bus routes in Jiading remain unchanged at 1 yuan per ride while passengers can enjoy free rides if they interchange within two hours.
The government hopes it can encourage more residents to use public transport and help reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions.
This year, it is estimated that more than 140 million yuan will be spent to support bus services in Jiading.
