Campus groups aid students

A heated discussion on how to start a new enterprise was staged in Shanghai College of Science and Technology last month.

The students in the college are keen to start new businesses with many of them opening a cosmetics and book business on Taobao.com, the largest online shopping Website in Asia. The business start-up lesson has become so popular that it has grown from once a week to twice in order to meet students' demand.

Student Liu Kemin sought help from other students dealing with business start-ups. The idea of setting up a business start-up society quickly took hold with students.

The society invited teachers to give lessons and set up a game to simulate actual business operations. In the game, all the departments in a real company exist, including manufacturing, sales and purchasing.

Liu said students got a feeling for the concept of risk through the game. Next Liu and the students will contact more enterprises in order for the members to have more opportunities to practice.

Gu Qiyan is a member of Qihang Society in the college and went to Guankou Town of Dujiangyan in Sichuan Province as a volunteer after the May 12 earthquake last year.

When she arrived, Gu was stressed and found it hard to adapt to the fact that the buildings along the road could collapse anytime. But she quickly devoted herself to the rescue work with other students. As the residents came from different neighborhoods and didn't know each other, Gu and two other Qihang Society members, Gong Chen and Zhu Chenxin, organized a party on December 28.

More than 300 residents welcomed the new year in a happy mood. Gu said when she saw residents' smiling faces, all the efforts of a month, including organizing donations, renting projectors and buying balloons, were worthwhile.

Watertowns, minorities and World Expo serve as perfect material for the Blue Memory Wax Printing Society of Fengbang Middle School. The society was ranked as a star society among Jiading middle school students.

Wax printing is a traditional folk art with rich patterns. In the wax printing exhibition hall of Fengbang Middle School, works as small as a palm to as big as a window can be found. Peng Ying, teacher in charge of the society, comes from Anshun City of Guizhou Province, the hometown of wax printing.

"The students are like little artists, creating works whenever there is inspiration," Peng said. The ability of using hands, creativity and cooperation have been greatly improved after attending the society, said a member, Qiu Zhiyi.
